[edit] General Guidelines

  • Do not add copyrighted material without the owner's permission.
  • If you add a copyrighted image after receiving permission from the owner, give them credit (there name, with an email and/or website if possible).
  • It is not preferable to hotlink images. Hotlinking is a term used to describe embedding images on websites when they are hosted on someone else's website. The acceptable alternative is to save the image onto your hard drive and then upload it to the BaltoCo site (see number 1 below). Hotlinking is considered rude because it increases bandwidth on the host's web server and bandwidth costs money.
  • Add lots and lots of images! Pictures, photos, artwork, these are elements that can really make an article attractive. Just be aware of copyright issues and ask other users first if you have any questions!

[edit] Two Ways

[edit] 1. Upload

[edit] Basics

  • If you are a registered user, you can upload images to the BaltoCo website.
  • File limitations/guidelines:
    • Only JPG, JPEG, PNG, and GIF file formats.
    • Under 150 KB file size recommended. If you upload a larger image, that's okay (just keep it reasonable), but if you do, the upload process will interrupt and ask if you are sure, in which case, just click Save File.
  • Recommended file size: 150 KB or less (To keep page-load time short)

[edit] The Steps

* Here's how to upload:
1. Click on the Upload File link, located under Toolbox,
on the very bottom, left side of the BaltoCo site.
2. Click the Browse button and locate the image file on your
   computer. Click OK.
3. You may change the destination filename if you wish, but
make sure that you keep the correct file extension
(jpg, jpeg, png, gif) if you do change it.
4. Write a brief, but explanatory summary of the image (include any
   relevant copyright/permission information here)
5. Click the Upload File button.
6. Now, the upload process will start, and while it looks like nothing
to you, there are actually thousands of little bits of data transferring
over the internet to our hosting service. You should only have to wait
for a minute or so. Any longer and I recommend you start over from the
   beginning or try again later.
7. After that short wait time, you should see your image in the web
   browser once upload is complete.
8. Make sure you copy the filename down (for embedding the image in an article).

[edit] Embedding

  • Embedding the image in an article:
    • Just include the following code (this is where you need that filename you wrote down:
    • When the article is viewed normally, your image should be displayed exactly where you copied in that code!

[edit] 2. Photo-Sharing Websites

  • This is an exception to the guideline about hotlinking (explained at the top of this page). Photo-sharing sites love being hotlinked to.

[edit] Flickr

Flickr Website

  • You can embed images from Flickr easily, just go to the extensions article and find the section titled Flickr. Check out the Farmers Market page to see four examples of the Flickr extension.

[edit] PhotoBucket

PhotoBucket Website

  • Coming Soon (or you could write this section if you want!)
